The
Maltese
Islands
Situated in the Mediterranean
Sea, the Maltese archipelago covers a total area of 315.5 km2.
The archipelago consists of Malta, which is the main island, and two
other sister islands. These are Gozo and Comino. One can travel
by ferry from Gozo to Malta. Some other
islets include: Cominetto, St. Paul's Isles, and Filfla.
The Maltese Islands are located in Southern Europe, close to North
Africa. Malta's
main cities are Valetta (the capital city), Mdina, Haz-Zebbug and
Hamrun. Gozo's capital city is Victoria.
The Islands' exact geographical
position is 36 0 North Latitude and 140
East longitude. The climate is typically Mediterranean with
temperatures ranging from 36 0C
in summer to 8 0C in winter.
Bathing is instinctive in summer, because of the high temperature
and the tempting crystal-clear waters.
The
Islands have three main harbours: the Mgarr harbours in Gozo, the
Grand Harbours near Valletta, and Marsaxlokk Harbours. The Islands'
only Freeport is located at Marsaxlokk. Compared
to its size, Malta has a lot to offer to the tourists, unlike the
impression one may have on first glance. From the Megalithic
Temples dating back to some 5,000 years ago, to the small, quiet,
isles of the archipelago. The latter are practically left
untouched, providing a perfect resting place. Apart
from this, Malta has that type of atmosphere that will give you
the much-needed rest you need. Meet the warm and welcoming people
on a slow, Maltese typical bus. They will help you tour the
Islands - no need for a map! The
Islands are still relatively calm and not directly affected by the hustle and bustle which other countries may
have. |
